Plant-based antimicrobial drugs

Mikhail Shtopko, Ukraine 13-15

This project relates to microbiology, medicine, and botany. The study primarily focused on testing phytoncides of plants for toxicity with respect to bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. The study revealed some completely new characteristics of phytoncides in common plants. High activity of viburnum extract against pathogenic bacteria and protozoa was demonstrated. In addition, antimicrobial activity of beetroot sap against protozoa turned out to be unexpectedly high. The resulting data suggests methods and areas of extract application.
