LightSafe: making the road safer with computer vision algorithms

Rishank Kanaparti, India 13-15

LightSafe is an effort to resolve a key problem faced by drivers during night driving: the high beam menace, which blinds people due to the sudden intensity of light, leading to car accidents. The best way to address this was to offer a solution that everyone could adopt. In India, we need to make it affordable, without compromising on performance or accuracy. To achieve this, I made use of components that are already available with the users: a smartphone for processing, which internally runs an algorithm to detect oncoming cars, and the car’s own controller to switch the beam.
