Red photoluminescent Eu3+-doped Y2O3 nanospheres as photon down-converters for LED-phosphor applications

We demonstrate that the unique structural and optical properties of the Y2O3:Eu3+ nanospheres could lead to an efficient photon down-conversion phosphor, which can be combined with GaAlN-based UV LEDs to generate white light. Y2O3:Eu3+ nanospheres with sizes of 40–334 nm in diameter, controlled by tuning the synthesis conditions, were successfully synthesized using a low-cost approach. We observed an amorphous-to-crystalline phase transformation of the nanospheres and identified strong red photoluminescence emission and ultraviolet (UV) excitation of the nanospheres. This project contributes to the efforts leading to energy-efficient lighting and electricity costs, helping reduce carbon emissions and combating climate change.
