How cell size affects a plant's maximum efficiency

Joseph Benedetti, Austin Gilbride, Connecticut, USA 16-18

The research conducted was to help understand constraints of genome size on cell size and packing density. Rhododendrons were obtained from the New York Botanical Garden and housed in the Greeley Memorial Laboratory greenhouse. They were then augmented via the use of colchicine to prevent cytokinesis after mitosis. This created ploidies 2x–8x for analyzation. After the plants grew both shade and sun leaves, both types were collected and stained for imaging. Once imaging was complete, ImageJ was used to measure specific cellular characteristics. Findings show that genome size roughly determines upper limits of cell size, but not necessarily packing density.
