Edible coatings in the postharvest of oranges

João Pedro Silvestre Armani, Brazil 13-15

This project looks at the extensive use of pesticides and the negative consequences they have around the world, as well as the improper disposal of shrimp shells, which is also problematic. It aims to put an end to these issues with a solution created from chitosan (a substance extracted from shrimp cephalothorax) and beeswax. The solution (made of 0.5% chitosan and 4% beeswax) not only preserves fruit longer, but can be used instead of pesticides and is a more responsible way of using shrimp shells.
