DVT prevention pedal

Arundathi Nair, Wyoming, USA 16-18

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that originates in the deep vein in the leg. DVT affects approximately 1 million Americans and kills up to 100,000 people annually. Immobility is a major, preventable risk factor for DVT. I designed and tested a simple, portable DVT prevention pedal using wooden slabs and torsion springs. The pedal can be easily strapped onto the foot and activated by plantar and dorsal flexions. Muscle activity in human subjects while using the pedal was comparable to that of normal walking as measured by electromyography. This device is a simple solution to prevent DVT.
