A study of avian population recovery after habitat restoration using remote sensing and citizen science data

Ashwin Sivakumar, California, USA 13-15

Fernhill Wetlands, a historically important bird habitat near Portland, Oregon, recently underwent a massive and complicated habitat restoration, transforming it from large, unused sewage ponds into a complex native wetland habitat. The objective of this project was to study the impact of this habitat restoration on the avian populations at Fernhill. While Audubon Portland has used bird survey data to study the avian population recovery, this study is the first to use remote sensing satellite imagery and eBird citizen science bird data to perform a comprehensive quantitative analysis of how habitat restoration has benefited avian population recovery at Fernhill Wetlands.
