Multi-membrane alginate water capsule: an eco-friendly method of sustainable water supply for agricultural fields

Minseok Kim, Jaihyun Kim, South Korea 16-18

We developed a water capsule to hydrate plants. Made primarily out of alginate, an eco-friendly substance extracted from seaweed, the capsule membrane discharges water at a steady pace, meaning that if planted near a root, it can constantly supply the plant with water. Our project was a process of recognizing the effects of certain alternations in the membrane, mainly composition and structure, on the water discharge profile. We confirmed that it is possible to control the rate of discharge to a certain extent, and thus is definitely applicable to real-life situations.
