Cleaning the world with sunscreen & pencils!

Samuel Burrow, United Kingdom Local Award, 15-16

Pollution is currently one of the biggest issues facing society today - 7 million people die a year from air pollution alone. I sought out a way of removing chemical pollutants from ecosystems, without draining excess power from our already energy-deficient society. I managed to cheaply produce a transparent paint out of Graphene, single sheets of graphite, and Titanium Dioxide, a major ingredient of suncream! The coating degrades larger molecules into their constituent parts using sunlight, giving it potential to remove airborne and waterborne pollutants, and remove bacteria from surfaces e.g. in hospitals, helping to combat the antibiotic crisis.
